BWS Recognized Internationally for Leadership in Planning

Water professionals publication features BWS’s efforts as a sustainability indicator 

HONOLULU – The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) was recognized by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) for its leadership in planning in the February issue of the Journal AWWA. The AWWA is an international non-profit, scientific and educational association founded to improve water quality and supply.

In an article entitled “Assessing the Sustainability of Urban Water Supply Systems,” the AWWA mentions the BWS’s work to prepare a comprehensive Water Master Plan, a strategic plan, and eight regional watershed management plans among its efforts to ensure Oahu’s resource sustainability.  It also notes how the development of the Water Master Plan included the formation and ongoing active engagement of a Stakeholder Advisory Group, composed of 28 community leaders representing various customer constituencies whose purpose is to provide important feedback on the BWS Water Master Plan, proposed rate study, and other key agency initiatives.

“This recognition is due to the teamwork of exceptional participants,” said BWS Manager and Chief Engineer.  “We are grateful for the guidance and support of our Board of Directors, who oversaw these efforts; for the recommendations of our Stakeholder Advisory Group that enhanced our Water Master Plan; and for the tireless and excellent work of our employees who helped to create the various parts of our water governance model.”

The long-term Water Master Plan was adopted by the BWS Board as a ‘living’ roadmap to meet future needs, establish infrastructure priorities, and identify sustainable financing strategies. Thoughtful, proactive investment in infrastructure and maintenance of the water system supports the BWS’s ability to better control rates over the long run. This, in turn, supports the BWS’s commitment to continue providing safe, dependable, and affordable water to all of its customers, now and into the future.
