Board of Water Supply Partners With City Agencies for World Water Day, March 22

HONOLULU – On March 22, 2023, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), together with the City’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) and Facility Maintenance (DFM) and government/private agencies around the globe, will highlight the importance of World Water Day.

This year’s theme is on accelerating change – the urgent need to solve the global water and sanitation crisis.  With a limited supply of drinking water, it’s important to be responsible stewards by being the change we want to see in the world. This is a pivotal moment for the world to unite around water, an essential resource for life.

“This includes working together to implement good conservation practices,” said BWS Manager and Chief Engineer Ernest Lau. “Water is an integral part of life and is vital to sustaining our high standard of living and prosperous economy and maintaining residents' health and welfare. Ola I Ka Wai – Water is life!”

According to the United Nations, as many as 1.4 million people worldwide die annually or have their life shortened by diseases related to poor water quality, sanitation, and hygiene.

Oahu’s World Water Day observance offers three online components to engage Oahu residents:

  • World Water Day “Hidden Word Puzzle Contest” – From now until March 22 at noon, take the challenge, complete the hidden word puzzle, and post your winning time on the BWS’s Instagram Page (@BWSHonolulu). The top three contestants who finish the puzzle in the fastest time will win a variety of prizes from each participating city agency, including a 55-gallon rain barrel. Complete the puzzle at www.boardofwatersupply.com/worldwaterday. (Please note that the hidden word puzzle may not display correctly on a mobile device and may require the use of a desktop).
