HONOLULU BOARD OF WATER SUPPLY AND HARDWARE HAWAII KICK OFF DETECT-A-LEAK WEEK CAMPAIGN

Leak detection and repair saves water and money

HONOLULU – The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) and Hardware Hawaii (HH Holdings, Inc.), are once again launching Detect-A-Leak Week from March 15-21, 2021. Through this partnership, Hardware Hawaii will donate 5,000 toilet leak detection dye tablets to encourage all Oahu water users to conserve water by detecting and repairing leaks, especially in toilets.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the average American home wastes more than 10,000 gallons of water every year---the amount it takes to wash 270 loads of laundry! Even small leaks can create a significate amount of waste, costing customers money. That’s why it’s important for all water users to regularly check their plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems throughout the year.

Toilets are especially leak prone; flappers are inexpensive rubber parts that can build up minerals or decay over time. Replacing them can be a quick and easy fix, eliminating water waste and saving customers money. We recommend taking your old or worn-out flapper to a nearby hardware store to ensure you get the right size.

To determine if you have a leaky toilet, remove the tank cover, and place either a toilet leak detection dye tablet or a few drops of food coloring into the tank. Make sure nobody uses the toilet for the next 15 minutes. If the water becomes discolored, there is a leak. To help with this effort, free toilet leak detection dye tablets are available during the observance at all Satellite City Halls, Hardware Hawaii stores, and the outside BWS lobby entrance at 630 South Beretania Street.
