seed of the month agave may 2018HONOLULU – The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden are pleased to offer visitors a free xeric (drought tolerant) seed or seedling of the month at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden. The community is invited to visit the garden on Wednesdays and Saturdays between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to receive a complimentary seed packet or cutting and an information sheet about their future plant’s origin, care, and interesting facts. Xeric plants are hardy, drought tolerant plants requiring minimal amounts of water to survive.

For the month of May visitors will receive an Agave pup. Each pup is a new baby agave plant waiting to be planted in the ground or a large decorative container. In a landscape, the leather like leaves gives this plant a commanding presence in any garden or patio deck. The plant will bloom once in its lifetime. Its six-petaled flowers hold some of the sweetest nectar which is enjoyed by garden friends like bees, birds, butterflies and hawk moths. Visitors receive one Agave pup per household while supplies last.

Garden enthusiasts are invited to drop by the Halawa Xeriscape Garden office each month to see what new xeric seeds and seedlings will be featured. The new seed or seedling of the month will be unveiled on Facebook at www.facebook.com/BWSHonolulu and Twitter at @BWSHonolulu the first Wednesday of each month.

The BWS and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden have welcomed guests for landscaping workshops, garden tours, and an annual plant sale featuring native Hawaiian and drought-tolerant (or unthirsty) plants since the garden opened in September 1989. Xeriscaping is based on seven principles that promote planning, planting, and maintaining a garden that takes advantage of natural climate conditions to make efficient use of irrigation.

The garden is located a 99-1268 Iwaena Street in Halawa Valley’s Central Industrial Area. For more information about the Halawa Xeriscape Garden and the workshops offered, visit www.boardofwatersupply.com or call 748-5315.
