New Date and Time for the Detect-A-Leak Week Event

The Board of Water Supply has teamed up with Hardware Hawaii for the annual Detect-A-Leak Week campaign. You're invited to attend our live and in-person event at Tamarind Park (Bishop Square) on Wednesday, April 26 at NOON. 

During the event:  

  • stop by the BWS booth to learn how to detect for leaks,
  • learn how to fix leaks from Hardware Hawaii,
  • pick up FREE leak detection dye tablets,
  • play games, get swag, and win prizes, including 1 of 4 WaterSense-labeled toilets from Hardware Hawaii.
  • 92-3 KSSK will be joining us to add to the event. 

Leaks can run, but they can’t hide!

Did you know that 10 percent of homes have leaks that waste at least 90 or more gallons of water per day?

In most cases, homeowners can fix leaks without a major financial investment. Join the Board of Water Supply and Hardware Hawaii during Detect-A-Leak Week to check your home for leaks inside and outside.

Toilets: 

  • Toilet leaks are considered "sneaky" since it's usually only noticeable when the leak gets bad.  One of the most common leaks in a toilet is an old or worn-out toilet flapper. These inexpensive rubber parts can build up minerals and decay over time. Replacing them is quick and easy.
  • Hardware Hawaii has generously gifted over 5,000 toilet leak detection dye tablets. They are FREE and available at all Hardware Hawaii stores, Satellite City Hall locations, and inside the BWS lobby at 630 South Beretania Street. 
  • Detect a toilet leak quickly and easily. Drop a dye tablet in your toilet tank. If color appears in the toilet bowl before flushing, you have a leak. 

Outdoor Leaks: 

  • A leaking irrigation system can soak homeowners with high water bills while wasting our limited  supply of precious water resources.  A properly maintained irrigation system will keep your yard healthy and save water.  
  • Examine your lawn for wet spots where the grass seems greener. This could be a broken underground pipe. 
  • Check your garden hose for leaks where it connects to the spigot. 
  • Check your sprinkler system for leaks. 

Faucets & Showerheads:

  • A faucet leaking at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water  per year. 
  • Inspect faucets, showerheads, water connection lines, and other fixtures for drips. 
  • Listen for the sound of water running through the pipes - many leaks can be detected by sound. 
  • Install a WaterSense labeled aerator onto each faucet to save water without noticing a difference in flow.
