May 7-13 2017, Proclaimed as Water Conservation Week on Oahu

Sponsors of BWS program honored at special ceremony with Mayor Kirk Caldwell

HONOLULU – Sponsors of the Board of Water Supply's (BWS) Water Conservation Week Program joined Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell for a proclamation presentation ceremony at Honolulu Hale today as he declared May 7 to 13, 2017, to be Water Conservation Week on Oahu.

The ceremony honored sponsors of the 2017 Water Conservation Week Program, which raises public awareness of the importance of using water efficiently through an annual poster and poetry contest that is open to all of Oahu's youth in grades Kindergarten through 12. Those honored at today's event included Sodexo; the Friends of the Halawa Xeriscape Garden; Hard Rock Café; Times Supermarkets; Alexander and Baldwin, Inc.; Hawaii Energy; and Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union.

"These organizations have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to a sustainable future for our island through their continued support of this successful and long-standing educational program for our keiki," said Mayor Caldwell. "They are helping to raise a generation of environmentally-akamai residents who value Oahu’s water supply."

"We are grateful for these sponsors, whose generous gifts help the BWS continue this well-established program at reduced costs to promote efficient water use," said BWS Manager and Chief Engineer Ernest Lau. "Water conservation is a key objective in our long-term Water Master Plan and one piece of the BWS's bigger effort to preserve and protect our irreplaceable and finite water resources now and in the future."

Winning and honorable-mention entries from the contest will be featured in the 2018 Water Conservation Calendar that will be distributed to all Oahu schools and elected officials, as well as to the general public, at the end of this year. They will also be on display at various locations throughout the year.
